After the game, a Waynesboro fan remarked, “If it weren’t for bad luck, we’d have no luck at all.”
That sums up this game as well as anything. The Generals smacked line drives, ripped hard ground balls, worked walks, and still lost, 7-3. The line drives ended up in Staunton gloves, and ground balls tended to go for double plays.
Mike Hernandez was the tough-luck loser, allowing 4 earned runs over 5 innings. Andrew Saab threw three effective innings, and Andy Altemus pitched an altogether entertaining 9th. (Altemus gave up a double, only to have the runner called out for missing first base; gave up a single and immediately picked off the runner; gave up another single and almost picked HIM off two or three times.)
The Generals were led at the plate by Cory Kovanda, who went 2-4 with his first home run of the season, and Alex McClure, who went 2-5 with a double. Jose Rodriguez chimed in with three walks.
The Generals fell to 16-20, while the Braves raised their record to 19-15.
The Generals travel to Luray tomorrow, and return home to the ‘Boro on Saturday, again against Staunton.
