Generals end regular season on a High Note – Sweep split Double Header

Greetings – Apologies for the break in news & coverage but now it is time to play catch up.

Mother Nature forced the Generals to play a split double header on the final day of the season and the Home Town Nine made the most of it by sweeping the day. Waynesboro opened the day with a 2:30 P.M. start and belted Covington around the Fish. When the scoreboard finally slowed down the Generals had plated 15 runs

There was a short break that included a thunder storm but the dedicated fans stayed in their seats for the Turn Back the Clock Night  to 1965 contest against Rockbridge. Another game and another victory as Matt Shepherd was lights out in his final start for the summer!

The 1965 Dance contest was the highlight of the festivites that included 25 cent RC Cola’s and Moon Pies as well as $1.50 admission. The team saluted former owners Roscoe Poole and Tom Lowery as well as former players from the 1965 team.

Game Postponed, Two Games Tomorrow!

Tonight’s game against Covington has been postponed due to the bad weather that blew through Waynesboro. (The field was under water!)

Tomorrow, Thursday, will be a new-fangled day-night doubleheader. Waynesboro will play Covington at 2:30, and then Rockbridge at 7:00. The Turn Back the Clock promotion will be held during the 7:00 game.

Come out for the last Valley League games of the season tomorrow!

Game 36: Staunton 7, Waynesboro 3

After the game, a Waynesboro fan remarked, “If it weren’t for bad luck, we’d have no luck at all.”

That sums up this game as well as anything. The Generals smacked line drives, ripped hard ground balls, worked walks, and still lost, 7-3. The line drives ended up in Staunton gloves, and ground balls tended to go for double plays.

Mike Hernandez was the tough-luck loser, allowing 4 earned runs over 5 innings. Andrew Saab threw three effective innings, and Andy Altemus pitched an altogether entertaining 9th. (Altemus gave up a double, only to have the runner called out for missing first base; gave up a single and immediately picked off the runner; gave up another single and almost picked HIM off two or three times.)

The Generals were led at the plate by Cory Kovanda, who went 2-4 with his first home run of the season, and Alex McClure, who went 2-5 with a double. Jose Rodriguez chimed in with three walks.

The Generals fell to 16-20, while the Braves raised their record to 19-15.

The Generals travel to Luray tomorrow, and return home to the ‘Boro on Saturday, again against Staunton.

Update on Sean Bukovich

For those listening to tonight’s broadcast of the Generals game at Covington, you might have heard that Generals’ third baseman Sean Bukovich was spiked on an attempted steal by Covington’s Lammar Guy. Guy didn’t slide, and spiked Sean’s right leg.

Jerry Carter took Sean to the emergency room, where five stitches were needed to close the wound. Sean’s doing well, and both Jerry and Sean are headed back to the game.
